When canonicalization chooses you…

Sometimes, you don’t get to choose your canonical. Your canonicalization chooses you.

Witness the client who developed an OSCommerce site. He wanted a canonical of www.

But the OSCommerce back-end is set to no-www. My client shrugged and said, “Eh, what the heck. Make it no-www then. No harm done.”

Good choice. The site hadn’t been launched yet, and it was one less set of coding hoops to jump through.

Now, consider the client who had a years-old site. He noticed that his www canonical had a significantly higher PR than his non-www canonical.

That made the choice for him. He’s a www canonical now….even though his preference was for no-www.

The point is: if you are in development or have a relatively new site with little to no traction at the search enginesĀ – choose your canonical before it chooses you.
