2007 Tech Predictions
Presentation thought leader Paul Gibler points us to Technology Evangelist for Ed’s Ten Top Tech predictions.
Y’all come back in a year now — see how many of these Web 2.0 predictions come true.
(Yup: every single tech prediction touches on Web 2.0, with the possible exception of #8.)
And number 8 reads:
8. Mobile advertising will take off, but with marginal results for advertisers.
On that one I’m 50/50: I hope mo-ads won’t take off (but regrettably, they probably will). And of course, mo-ad results will be horrible for advertisers….but that likely won’t stop them from investing in this travesty, anyway. See what Seth sez…
I’d say Ed’s 2007 batting average is gonna be high….

Ed - you are right, sir!
I think it won’t take off, either — for the same reasons.
The reason I waffled is because I thought you actually wrote “Mobile advertising will take off”.
How about this: “When it takes off, it will come crashing down to earth like the big dud that it is!”
Mo-ads will crash when advertisers wake up and look at their lousy performence metrics.
And it will fall with a thud when phone companies realize that they are annoying their subscribers more than they are delighting their advertisers.
It will be interesting to see if mobile advertising ends up being a phone carrier play or more of a web play. I’d guess the latter.

Laura, thanks for comments on my predictions. For mobile advertising, I have things in mind like Google AdWords for Mobile, which is running now. I don’t think it will take off because people are very unlikely to waste time on their phone - especially with today’s phone bandwidth - clicking on ads.
