Not-so Hot Trends

Google Trends unleashed a new feature yesterday: the top hun fastest growing keywords.

Beneath the Google Trends search, you’ll see a new feature titled “Today’s Hot Trends”.

If you take a look at the list today, you might scratch your head.

Hot Trends

For example, number one on the list this morning was: “what part of a graduate’s costume gave the cordon bleu cooking school its name”

That’s kind of unlikely, don’t you think?

Especially when you consider that the lead story on all three network news programs last night was about the potential severity of health risks caused by Avandia, a popular diabetes medication. The Avandia story effects millions — and yet the cordon bleu cooking school gets top billing at Google Trends?

This doesn’t add up.

Of course, it doesn’t make sense that all three networks featured a drug commercial (that listed multiple side effects) directly after their top news story, either.

Hmmm, maybe Google Trends (and the networks) need some more time to get their acts together.

I’ll bet Google takes a much shorter time to start delivering more relevant results, though.

[...] Als we de data voor 21 mei 2007 bekijken zien we daar verrassend op een 25e plaats de zoekopdracht “what did lawyer ellis rubin suggest prison inmates could donate in exchange for reduction in their sentences in 1992“. Op een 89e plaats vinden we “who was the first new world explorer to take a dip in the springs of what’s now hot springs arkansas“. That was a question from a crossword puzzle today.

Interesting, RAD. I am a big crossword puzzle fan, but I cannot remember looking up a tough clue on Google. But I have looked up tough trivia before.

And eWeek wrote that Google Hot Trends reveals a Radio Web synergy.

Smart idea for Radio Quizzes — plan the quiz a week in advance and buy the adwords for the search.

But still. How crazy is our world that radio quizzes and crossword puzzles get more of our mental attention than news that can actually severely impact our quality of life?
