Beware of Domain Name Slammers…
If you get a professional looking piece of mail telling you that your domain name is about to expire, watch out!
The letter is probably the predatory work of a Domain Slammer. These scammers will erroneously tell you that your domain name (DNS) is about to expire, and that you’d better send a check and all your DNS account information to them immediately — before your entire online business is put into risk.
Domain Slammers may also try to steal your DNS — and your money — through telemarketing and email scams, too. So be careful!
To effectively combat DNS slamming, here are three things you must know about your domain:
1. Know what your domain is,
2. Know when it expires, and
3. Know the name of your current registrar.
If you don’t know these three items cold (or keep this info in a secure area where you can look up the info easily), you can find out at www.netsol.com (click on “whois” in the domain name query) or at www.dnsstuff.com. Scammers count on business owners being uninformed and disorganized. They bank on panic and prey on false urgency.
