Be not afraid of Open Source

A programmer friend expressed concern that many of the sites I develop are based on mySQL. (According to their tag line, MySQL is the world’s most popular open source database.)

My programmer friend is afraid of anything Open Source. What’s the Latin term for Open Source phobia? Well, he’s got it. He reckons that if you don’t pay for something, that it will eventually break down and you’ll be left with nothing. (Like that never happens with paid programs?)

Anyway, nothing I can say to him about mySQL can convince him that it’s a dependable and reliable database. There’s no fighting a phobia — or is there?

If you have open source phobia, consider this. LiveJournal, Flickr, Google, and Yahoo use MySQL. Please make a note of it.
