The Guy I Want in My Rolodex
There’s a guy missing from my Rolodex.
And when I say “guy” — it’s not a sexist term. By “guy” — I mean a man or a woman. (Southerners say “y’all”. Yankees say “you guys”. To most of us Northerners, “guys” is an all-inclusive, gender-neutral term. But I digress…)
The guy I want in my Rolodex: I want a totally independent computer repair person. A real mensch, devoted to getting viruses off computers, installing networks and devices, adding new drives and boards, repairing crashes, restoring lost data, etc. — someone who is focused and passionate.
What I don’t want: I don’t want a “geek” who works for some “squad” out of some big box store. I can’t feel the devotion or passion there. I’d rather support a local small business than a slick corporate customer-service machine filled with dubious talent.
Note: there’s nothing wrong with my computer. At the moment, there’s nothing wrong with my computers or networks. But there comes a time in everyone’s life when you need that guy. I want that guy in my Rolodex.
Further, I want to be so confident in that guy’s abilities, that I’ll be happy to recommend him/her to clients that ask:
“Hey, do you know a guy who can help me with (insert computer problem here)”
Clients ask me for this guy’s name all the time. And that guy is not in my Rolodex anymore. (Not at LinkedIn, either!)
I used to have these guys in my Rolodex. Every one of them got snatched up by a company or government agency that realized how valuable these guys are. And once these guys are employed, their services are no longer available to the general public.
This issue has come up in conversations three times with three different people this month.
Everybody seems to want that guy.
Where are they?
Are you that guy? Are you in the Grand Rapids area?
Because you need to be in my Rolodex!

Here’s your guy, and yes he’s local.
Rich Webb
Zylatech
(616) 608-0005
Referred to you by PEC Technologies (another local company)
Awesome! With a name like Webb, you must be good!
(I bet you get that all the time!)
I walk past PEC Technologies all the time — they’re downtown between Eyekons and the Cottage Bar — right?
That IS local!
Yes, PEC was downtown in the old White & White building. However, since the other tenant in the building needed room to grow, we gave them our space and we’ve relocated to 401 Hall St., the old Steelcase factory overlooking 131.
Drop me a line, i’ve got a few questions for ya.
