Twitter is irritating. It's a decent traffic source, but that's it. Too many people spam it.

Great article, Laura! Thanks for being an "unofficial ambassador" to a Twitter Novice like me. At times I actually feel like I get it.

This is a great post, a little old now but the information is fresh as ever. You're right on with your stages of Twitter, though I always have the feeling that I might be wasting my time reading through so much drivel. But I have fun and have seen some good traffic as a result of twitter.

I've been on twitter for only a few weeks, well longer but I didn't do anything with it. I wonder if I really want to have a lot of twitter followers or more to the point do I really want to be trying to watch 100's of others.

I like the quick communication and have used it to keep in touch with a handful of people, but do I really want to reach out and be touched by hundreds of people. How do you keep up with a large list without being forced to ignore people.

Dennis (aka @denthewise)

As usual, your insights are quite correct.

Fail whale and spam dismay are also part of my daily emotional experience...

...as well as Laureate elation!

Thanks for dropping by!

Laura,

Nice. I think that's a pretty good stage sequence. You did forget some steps though:

x sputtering in rage at the Fail Whale and twitter technology missteps.

y Feeling proud and sad when you get followed by your first twitter spammer

z Feeling comfortable enough to share something really personal, but @replying instead of DMing.

And of course, the crowning pinnacle of Twitter... participating in Twitter Laureate.

Thanks for doing this.
